4 Landscape Myths Busted!

services

Myth: “Cutting my grass short is environmentally friendly and means I’ll have to cut it less often.”

False! We recommend that you do not cut more than one-third of your grass height. By keeping your grass at this length, it ensures that the yard’s root system is not in distress. We also recommend that you let the clippings lay! Grass clippings recycle nutrients, increase organic matter in the soils, and reduce weed infestations. Leaving your grass at this appropriate length also means less water, higher resistance to weeds, and a more rich and healthy color. Often times, shorter grass can lead to browner grass.

Myth: “It’s safe to water my lawn everyday, anytime of day.”

False! Water conservation is vital to your community and environment. It’s recommended that you water your lawn twice a week is actually better than watering it every day. Think of it this way; an inch of water to 12 inches of soil is the preferred ratio. Watering your lawn in the early morning or evenings is the ideal time as it leads to less evaporation.

Myth: “Spring is the best and only time to fertilize, plant flowers, etc.”

False! There’s no true right time to fertilize. While it’s true that spring is an ideal time, fertilization and planting can go on throughout the year. Now this doesn’t ring true for other areas but Southwest Florida is lucky for nearly year-round tropical weather. Remember to be wary of fertilization in regards to run off in canals and any other water source. If you’re unsure of how your fertilization will affect the surrounding environment, call a professional.

Myth: “I don’t need an irrigation system, I can just use a hose, right?”

False! Irrigation systems are an integral component to the sustenance and longevity of your lawn. Ensure that every part of your landscape receives the appropriate precipitation rate. If you’re stuck on irrigation, Blue Landscape offers the latest in low volume or drip type irrigation systems to save water and place irrigation where it is needed; on the plant roots.
